Saugerties AYSO U6 Division Regulations...
- The U-6 activity day:
- Start off with: 10 - 15 minutes of basic technical development and warm-up
- Then play: 4 x 8 minute periods with 2-3 minute breaks between periods for substitution
- Field Dimensions:
- 30 yards long, 15 yards wide (max), traditional markings are optional, but corners are marked
- Goals:
- Maximum four feet high and six feet wide
- The ball is size 3
- Players:
- A maximum of three per team on field; no goalkeepers.
- No player may take up permanent or semi-permanent position within the "goal area" (this is the box in front of the goal which designates where goal kicks are taken from), unless there is active play in that area. Violators should be instructed by the coaches to move. The purpose of this rule is to prevent players acting as de facto goalkeepers.
- NO slide tackling, No deliberate heading, NO penalty kicks
- Substitutions:
- Between periods and for injuries.
- Children should be allowed and encouraged to play for the full period but, substitutions are allowed where essential. For all non-essential substitutions and in the case of an "overloaded team", substitutions should be limited to one round at the halfway point of the period.
- Substitutions can only be made during normal play stoppages and must be made without causing delay to the game.
- Coaches must notify referee before a substitution can be made.
- All players must play at least half of the game and no player shall play the entire game until everyone has played at least three quarters.
- Teams:
- Separate girls and boys teams.
- Only players should be allowed on the field, with the exception of a coach from each team who will manage the game.
- Duration of Game:
- Four eight-minute periods, with 2-3 minute breaks between periods for substitutions.
- Sportsmanship:
- At times, the talent of one team exceeds that of another. If a U6 team has a 4 or more goal lead, that team must make every effort to prevent "running up the score". To slow down runaway scoring, one technique is to have the kids complete 3 passes before shooting.
- Players’ Equipment:
- Footwear: Soccer shoes, tennis shoes or similar type athletic shoes are recommended. The type and condition of cleated shoes must be inspected for safety before use.
- Shinguards: MANDATORY for both practices and games, and must be covered entirely by socks.
- Team Uniform: must be worn and visible while on the field.
- Hoods must be tucked inside uniform during play.
- NO hats with brims.
- Start of Play:
- The game should be started with a kick-off in the middle of the field.
- The coaches determine which team starts the game with a coin flip and the opposing team starts the second half.
- Opponents must be five yards from the center mark while kick-off is in progress.
- Fouls & Misconduct:
- To be assessed by coaches.
- Direct free kick for all fouls, with the opponents five yards away from the ball.
- U-6 Officials
- There is no need for fully qualified referees to manage U-6 games. One or both of the coaches should “officiate”. The games are intended to be an opportunity for the very youngest of our players to experience the fun of playing. The barest of minimum rules are needed and should be applied with a generous amount of flexibility. Let the players have the freedom to play with minimum interruption.
- Coaches/Parents:
- Please make sure your child is NOT wearing any jewelry. No metal barrettes, a terry headband is the best.
- Shinguards are required for practice and games and must be worn under the socks.
- Coaches for this division can be on the field to direct the players (hey coaches, don't get involved with play or block goals, unless you are 6 years old)
- Parents - Please stay along the touchlines (but 6' back), not on the field and not behind the goal or along the goal line.
- Call encouragement but not instructions. The players cannot hear them.
- Ball in and out of play:
- Boundary lines are to be used for out-of-bounds calls. Some small allowance (1 foot or less) can be made with the discretion of the referee/coach provided it appears that the ball will be immediately returned to the field of play and, there is no added safety risk to the player(s). This will help promote the flow of the game.
- When the whole ball crosses the touchline the restart is a throw-in by the opposing team with players at least 2 yards from the throw-in.
- When the whole ball crosses the goal line (outside the goal) by a player on the attacking team, the restart is a goal kick.
- When the whole ball crosses the goal line (outside the goal) by a player on the defending team, the restart is a corner kick.
