Saugerties AYSO U12 Division Regulations...

  1. Field Dimensions:
    • 100 yards long, 50 yards wide (max), with traditional markings

  2. Goals:
    • Maximum seven feet high and seven yards wide.

  3. The ball is size 4

  4. Players:
    • A maximum of nine per team on field; one of which is a goalkeeper.
    • NO slide tackling

  5. Positions:
    • A player may be goalie for no more than one half of the game. Any player who is goalie for half of a game, must also play at least one quarter as a field player.
    • Saugerties AYSO's policy is to rotate the players around to different positions and to give all players equal opportunity. Coaches should rotate players so NO player is in an offensive, defensive, or mid-field position for more than 1/2 of the total game.

  6. Substitutions:
    • Between periods and for injuries.
    • Children should be allowed and encouraged to play for the full period but, substitutions are allowed where essential. For all non-essential substitutions and in the case of an "overloaded team", substitutions should be limited to one round at the halfway point of the period.
    • Substitutions can only be made during normal play stoppages and must be made without causing delay to the game.
    • Coaches must notify referee before a substitution can be made.
    • All players must play at least half of the game and no player shall play the entire game until everyone has played at least three quarters.

  7. Teams:
    • Separate girls and boys teams.
    • Only players should be allowed on the field, coaches should remain on the sidelines.

  8. Duration of Game:
    • Four 12-minute periods, with 2-3 minute breaks between periods for substitutions.

  9. Sportsmanship:
    • At times, the talent of one team exceeds that of another. If a team has a 4 or more goal lead, that team must reassign its players to a field position where more goals are unlikely. "Running up the score" is considered unsporting conduct on the part of the coach and every effort should be made to throttle back the scoring.

  10. Players’ Equipment:
    • Footwear: Soccer shoes, tennis shoes or similar type athletic shoes are recommended. The type and condition of cleated shoes must be inspected for safety before use.
    • Shinguards: MANDATORY for both practices and games, and must be covered entirely by socks.
    • Team Uniform: must be worn and visible while on the field.
    • Hoods must be tucked inside uniform during play.
    • NO hats with brims.

  11. Start of Play:
    • The game should be started with a kick-off in the middle of the field.
    • The coaches determine which team starts the game with a coin flip and the opposing team starts the second half.
    • Opponents must be eight yards from the center mark while kick-off is in progress.

  12. Fouls & Misconduct:
    • Offside rules will be followed more closely as the season progresses. On October 1 of each season, complete enforcement of the offsides rules will take effect.
    • Opponents must be eight yards from the ball on restart kicks.
    • All fouls are enforced and guidelines for restarts are followed.
    • Referees will work cooperatively with the coaches and eliminate the need for cautions and send-offs.

  13. U-12 Officials
    • Games shall be refereed by Certified AYSO referees or by Certified AYSO Junior referees. Certified Junior referees must be age 10 or older and can only referee games one or more age divisions below their own.
    • If no Certified or Junior Certified referees are available, the coaches may agree on a referee of their mutual choice.
    • Under no circumstance, criticize the actions of the referees. Our organization shall support and protect its referees and shall deal particularly harshly with harassment of junior referees.
    • Our organization shall provide training, including field supervision, to all new referees.
    • The referee should briefly explain any infringements to the player(s) and encourage proper play and sporting behavior. As with all games, every effort should be made to keep the game moving and free from stoppages for doubtful infractions. Let them play and enjoy.

  14. Linesmen:
    • Club Linesmen (untrained volunteers who may be affiliated with one of the teams) should be recruited from the spectators to assist the referee with calling the ball in and out of play only. This is an opportunity for parents to get involved.

  15. Coaches/Parents:
    • Please make sure your child is NOT wearing any jewelry. No metal barrettes, a terry headband is the best.
    • Shinguards are required for practice and games and must be worn under the socks.
    • Please stay along the touchlines (but 6' back), not on the field and not behind the goal or along the goal line.
    • Call encouragement but not instructions. The players cannot hear them.

  16. Ball in and out of play:
    • When the whole ball crosses the touchline the restart is a throw-in by the opposing team with players at least 2 yards from the throw-in.
    • When the whole ball crosses the goal line (outside the goal) by a player on the attacking team, the restart is a goal kick.
    • When the whole ball crosses the goal line (outside the goal) by a player on the defending team, the restart is a corner kick.
